Tuesday, June 12, 2012"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We woke up to rain, so weren\u2019t in any hurry to get going.\u00a0 Shortly after noon, the rain turned to drizzle, so we headed out to explore in a different direction.<\/p>\n<p>Our first intended destination was the monument to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arcenant\" target=\"_blank\">Maquis in the village of Arcenant <\/a>but, we took the wrong turn in the village centre (there were no signs) and it\u2019s so tricky to turn around on these small roads, we decided to keep going and come back another day (it\u2019s only 10 minutes from \u201chome\u201d).\u00a0 We headed through mountain passes towards Le Pont d\u2019Ouche, then followed the Canal de Bourgogne for many kilometres, turning away only as we got close to Dijon.\u00a0 We will save Dijon for another day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/VviAbwJ9vi0\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/VviAbwJ9vi0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The canal is so unlike what we\u2019re used to at home.\u00a0 To begin with, it\u2019s not very wide but we didn\u2019t realize how narrow it is until we came across a canal boat that had only inches available on each side in one of the locks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/055-Barge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-136\" src=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/055-Barge-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"055 Barge\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/055-Barge-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/055-Barge.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/056-Barge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-137\" src=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/056-Barge-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"056 Barge\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/056-Barge-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/056-Barge.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And check out this<a href=\"http:\/\/www.afloatinfrance.com\/web\/taif\/afloat_in_france.jsp\" target=\"_blank\"> vacation boat company<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>There are locks every few kilometres, and all the locks are operated manually.\u00a0 The drops from one level to another don\u2019t look to be more than 10 feet, and the doors are not as tight, allowing quite a rush of water to stream through them continually.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/057-Lock.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-139\" src=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/057-Lock-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"057 Lock\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/057-Lock-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/maureensmusings.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/057-Lock.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each lock has a lock master and each lock master has a cottage residence right beside the lock.\u00a0 The ones we saw are all charming &#8211;
